E3 Saxo Bank Classic 2023 preview is about the race that means the start of the Flanders classics, the true beginning of spring and the return of warm weather and sunshine. Team Jumbo Visma has been giving a lesson on cobbles for a year now and who can really stop them? So how do we get keep going in the superclasico?

E3 Saxo Bank Classic 2021 and 2022 review

The past 2 editions were marked by total team domination by a single team who played and dominated in both numbers and quality. Kasper Asgreen did win the 2022 edition when he dominated the likes of Mathieu Van der Poel but this was absolute team work. It was the culmination of hard day work from Quick-Step. The wolf pack always had riders at the front of the race ready to attacks and pounce on counters.

Last year, Team Jumbo-Visma took things to another level E3 Saxo Bank Classic. The arrival of riders like Christophe Laporte and Tieej Benoot meant that Wout van Aert did not have to suffer the weight of the race anymore. The Dutch team set out to front of the peloton once the climbs arrived and shattered the peloton each and everytime. With 40km, Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte attacked on the Patenberg, never to be seen again as they time-trialed to the finish.

E3 Saxo Bank Classic 2023 preview for Velogames

    • Tadej Pogačar UAE Team Emirates 32 :  He planes to attack on the climbs, see who can follow, attack again and repeat. Until the final ride to the line when he is confident enough  now to also win sprints.

    • Mathieu Van Der Poel Alpecin-Deceuninck 32 :He strikes when he wants to. He will not be giving his best most probably as he builds towards Tour de Flanders.

    • Wout Van Aert Jumbo-Visma 32 : He is yet to win this season. He will definitely be chasing this one with rage.

    • Julian Alaphilippe  Soudal – Quick Step 28: His form has not spoken well of him yet this season.

    • Matej Mohorič  Bahrain – Victorious 26: Probably one of the safest high points here as his team do not have an array of other options.

    • Mads Pedersen Trek – Segafredo 24 :He was excellent on the Poggio. This is a very different though and he is kind of isolated with Stuyven against Jumbo Visma. Even Alpecin has more options.

    • Dylan Van Baarle Jumbo-Visma 24 : Team Jumbo Visma is going to sting very hard and he is one of the bee.

    • Jasper Stuyven Trek – Segafredo 22 : He had a very light schedule so far as he prepares himself to a classics season where he has high ambition.

    • Stefan Küng Groupama – FDJ 22 : He can ride, he will be in the front group. He will be worth his 22 points but he will still not be able to sprint to victory.

    • Yves Lampaert  Soudal – Quick Step 22: Form is good as seen in the terrible weather at De Panne.

    • Biniam Girmay Intermarché – Circus – Wanty 22 : He seems to be very slightly in less better form than last year at the same time. But, we will have more of an idea after E3.

    • Benoît Cosnefroy AG2R Citroën Team 22 : Not really his forte as he enjoys punchy finishes more.

    • Tiesj Benoot Jumbo-Visma 22 : part of the frightening Jumbo Visma team. Good placing and assists points should be expected.

    • Christophe Laporte Jumbo-Visma 22: He had an impressive first season at Jumbo Visma with a very successful Classics. More of the same is expected

    • Valentin Madouas Groupama – FDJ 20: He came, he saw and convinced at the Flanders Classics last year. Time to go on step above,

    • Filippo Ganna INEOS Grenadiers 20: A performance after his exploit at MSR is no surprise. He is not the strongest in his tea here though.

    • Tim Wellens UAE Team Emirates 18: He will be putting attacks forcing Jumbo Visma and Alpecin to rider while Pogacar watches.

    • Søren Kragh Andersen Alpecin-Deceuninck 18: He showed excellent form in Milan San Remo finishing 5th. He likes the Ardennes. He can shine this time while MVDP lays low and does not have to chase everything on his own.

    • Quinten Hermans Alpecin-Deceuninck 16: He prefers Ardennes races but he is now part of a team where they are also using numbers to relieve MVDP

    • Mike Teunissen Intermarché – Circus – Wanty 16: The Belgian team does not have a reputation for going all in for only one rider. Yes they have better chance with Girmay, but with his experience coming from Team Jumbo Visma, the Dutch is a very attractive option after his 11th place at Omloop Van Nieuwsblad and 8th at Le Samyn.

    • Dries Van Gestel TotalEnergies 14: Good classics rider he had some promising results in the classics in 2021. Crashed at Dwars last season after finishing 3r at Gent.

    • Jhonatan Narváez INEOS Grenadiers 14: He is made for this type of courses. Cobbles and Climbs. He can sprint too. Expect him to be with the best.

    • Matis Louvel Team Arkéa Samsic 14: Excellent on the cobbles he had 2 top 10 finishes in Flanders last season. A man to watch out for!

    • Ben Turner INEOS Grenadiers 14: Back from his crash at Omloop. He is destined to do well for Flanders but his form is unknown right now.

    • Tosh Van Der Sande Jumbo-Visma 10: Both are expected to protect the other riders but don’t be surpise to see them jumping onto moves themselves while trying to blow the race apart.

    • Edoardo Affini Jumbo-Visma 8: Assist for Jumbo Visma or could also be part of the play

    • Alex Kirsch, Otto Vergaerde Trek – Segafredo 6: Assist for Pedersen or Stuyven

    • Lewis Askey Groupama – FDJ 6: Already seduced last week, He had ridden Flanders classsics race before and will do well along-side Madouas and Kung

    • Sjoerd Bax UAE Team Emirates   6: Suprinsingly his first experience at Flanders

    • Mikkel Bjerg UAE Team Emirates 6: assists + good performances

    • Samuel Watson Groupama – FDJ 6: 1st at Gent juniors last year, 5th at Tro Bro Leon in 2022! FDJ is seriously bleeding talent and he has already showed his worth with his 6th place at Denain.

    • Rui Oliveira UAE Team Emirates 6: Potential assist for Pogacar

    • Kim Heiduk INEOS Grenadiers 6: The German seems to be made for these type of terrain but he DNF all his flanders races last year,

    • Lukas Pöstlberger Team Jayco AlUla 6: potential for a break away

    • Filippo Colombo Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team 4: 29th at KBK, 13 at Danilith, 17th at Denain, He seems to enjoy cobbles but what about climbs

    • Joshua Tarling INEOS Grenadiers 4: Expert time trialist, his performance in classics as a junir are not spectacular but he will be observed here                .
